Yorkshire is one of the best counties in the UK. Okay, I might be a bit biased there, it is my home after all. But it is a beautiful place and even in the cold months of winter, there are places to visit and things to do all over Yorkshire. So, if you’re looking for a little get away in the next few months, here are some things to do in Yorkshire this winter…
This building is beautiful. It’s magnificent and awe-inspiring and so incredibly detailed, you could spend a good afternoon in York Minster and not see it all. Go on a guided tour of the Minster’s undercroft, see the beauty of the stained glass windows as the sun shines through or climb the central tower to see spectacular panoramas of the York and the surrounding areas. Maybe take a jacket if you’re going up there though!
Fancy a delicious Sunday roast one weekend? Well if you visit Blacker Hall Farm Shop near Wakefield, you’ll get all the fresh local produce you need for a delicious home cooked meal. Oh, you fancy dessert too? They do some scrumptious cakes as well if you fancy a sweet treat after your dinner. They even have an alcohol store upstairs, gift shops in the courtyard and a restaurant at the back, just in case you don’t fancy cooking after all…
Get your coat on, your walking shoes laced up and get out into the fresh air for a walk around Newmiller Dam. This place is gorgeous at any time of year but during winter, especially when there’s frost on the ground, it makes for a great afternoon outdoors. If you make your way from the car park, you can do a circular walk around the tree surrounded lake in around an hour. Plus, there’s a pub nearby which is perfect for that post-walk warm drink!
Just because it’s winter in Yorkshire doesn’t mean we’ll get some good ol’ snow. If you do want to mess around in the white stuff though, why not head to Xscape to try out snowboarding? It’s a fun, addictive sport and who knows, you might just find a new hobby. If not though, Xscape has still got restaurants, a bowling alley, a climbing wall, a high ropes obstacle course, bars, and you can go sledging on the slope too which looks pretty fun!
If you like a good pint or too, the Black Sheep Brewery Tour is just the thing for you. Head up to Masham in North Yorkshire to see how this popular ale is made. Even if you don’t like ale, like me, the process of creating this drink is fascinating and if the tasters aren’t your thing, the food in the brewery’s restaurant might be!
Only open on the weekends during winter, White Scar Caves is the place to see how breathtaking Yorkshire is under ground as well as above ground. Take the 1 mile tour through the caves to see stalactites, stalagmites and underground waterfalls.
Chatsworth House is magical, especially over the festive season. They dress the house up with the most extravagant decorations and it just makes it a completely unique place to spend a winter’s day. The gardens are also a pretty special place to explore and if you’re lucky, there may even be a market on in the courtyard where you can pick up some unique treats.
So if you’re in Yorkshire this winter, will you be visiting any of these places? Are there any more places you would go to this winter in Yorkshire?
